Michigan Title and Registration Information for a Hardknock
To title and register your Hardknock in Michigan is more time consuming than anything but if you follow these easy steps it will go by fast and without problems.
Build the bike completely and make sure everything works properly.
Go to
www.michigan.gov/sos and download the TR-54 form.
Go to your local police station, schedule an inspection and pay the fee ($20-30). If you haven’t got the TR-54 form at this point you can ask for one at the police station.
After the officer has completed the inspection and the bike has passed, make sure the officer fills the form out completely.
Take the completed TR-54 form along with you sales receipt to your local Secretary of State office. You can bring the MSO but it is not necessary, also bring your proof of insurance if you would like to get a temporary tag.
Tell the clerk that you would like to title and register the bike as an assembled vehicle or home build and give them your paperwork.
Do NOT try to title and register the bike as a Kikker 5150.
The clerk will have you fill out a few other short forms issue you a VIN number and ask you to pay the title/ registration fees and maybe the sales taxes. (Be prepared to spend as much as $200)
The Secretary of State office will notify you within 4-8 weeks about the title and actual VIN sticker for the bike. Once you have the title and vin, return to the Secretary of State office with the title and proof of insurance, show the clerk pay the fees, get your plate and tags. Ride safe.
